Movie Review: Are you ready for "The Purge"?

If you are looking for a movie that would play with your senses and make your heartbeat faster... this is the film you are looking for. From the producer of Paranormal Activity and Sinister, equally brilliant psychological thriller comes a movie like no other, The Purge. Oh, yes this one is a must see for those who enjoy movies that would make you scream.

"One night a year, all crime is legal."

The attack used by the director of the film to the plot using an intimate number of cast gave the audience a feel of a reality-TV show feel to the movie. It is as if you are watching a live feed from a satellite broadcast. The way the film was shot and the color and texture of cinematography tends to help increase the feel of tension in the film. There is a sudden surprise in anticipation of every turn of the main characters in the dark passages and hallways of their own home that was turned into a labyrinth of murderers. I can still recall myself shouting several times in the cinema while watching this. It is another film that kept me awake for hours thinking "What if it was a possible reality in our future?".

The Purge is a 2013 American science fiction thriller film directed and written by James DeMonaco. Starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, the film is set in the year 2022 when the United States have become "a nation reborn", with crime and unemployment rates hitting an all-time low, due to the government having instituted an annual 12-hour period called "the Purge" during which all criminal activity (including murder, theft, rape, etc.) becomes legal. The only rules during the Purge are that 1) government officials of "ranking 10" must remain unharmed and 2) usage of weaponry above "Class 4" (such as WMDs) is forbidden. The Purge is designed to act as a catharsis for the American people, so that they may vent all negative emotions however they desire.

The killing tools used in the movie ranges from an ordinary knife to a "Where the hell did you get that kind of knife?" type. The performance of the actors are believable. You'll get hooked to the suspense and rush every scene gives. The anticipation of sudden death and thriller is very unpredictable. The insert clips of live footage from different parts of the country added more realistic feel to the film. I would give it a 4 out of 5 stars only because Sinister still goes on top of my list, nonetheless this movie is very good!
